On Tuesday 19th January 2016, Channel 4 aired a documentary entitled “Jihadis Next Door”. While the majority of Muslims and non-Muslims alike were shocked at the aggressive behaviour and hate that was being spouted by such individuals, it was clear that they were not a true representation of this beautiful faith.
Among the amazing work of Islamic organisations and mosques across the UK (and the world), the One Community department has been striving hard in showing the true teachings of Islam and positive efforts in bringing communities together.
Looking at the life of the Prophet Muhammad (may God’s peace and blessings be upon him), it is clear that he showed compassion, justice and kindness to those around him, even those who did not accept Islam.
Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:
“Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes” (Chapter 60, verse 8)
In light of this, the title and context of the documentary, “Jihadis next door”, could imply that the Muslims who live “next door” to non-Muslims are similar to those on the programme. However, this is far from the prophetic tradition in Islam of how Muslims are to interact with their neighbours!
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let them be kind to their neighbour.” (Muslim)
Therefore, to fulfil the rights of the neighbour is one of the most beautiful teachings of Islam, where we are commanded to show kindness and consideration towards them, regardless of their colour, gender, looks or religion. In fact, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Jibreel kept on recommending me to treat the neighbours kindly and politely, that I thought that Allah would order [me] to make them [my] heirs.“ [Bukhari]. This is a prophetic teaching that can create a huge impact on our communities.
So at One Community, we say, “DITCH THE HATE! SHOW THE LOVE!” by carrying out the Love Your Neighbour Campaign!
A very simple campaign that ALL Muslims can get involved in! Simply show kindness to your neighbour!
